Student Leadership

At Our Lady of the Assumption School, leadership is more than a title, it’s a way of living out our faith in action. From the classroom to the broader community, our students are given meaningful opportunities to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and grow into confident, responsible young leaders. Through Student Council, the National Junior Honor Society, and hands-on service experiences, OLA students learn that leadership begins with character and is strengthened through service to others.

Student Council: Leading with Purpose
Our Student Council empowers 7th and 8th grade students to take an active role in shaping the life of our school. These student leaders collaborate with faculty and administration to plan events, represent their peers, and foster a strong sense of community across all grade levels.

Rooted in the values of the Corporal Works of Mercy, Student Council members lead and support a variety of impactful initiatives, including:
  • Food Drives
  • Christmas Toy Drives
  • Writing letters to service members
  • Supporting local outreach efforts for those experiencing homelessness
  • Organizing and serving monthly lunches

Through these experiences, students develop essential leadership skills—communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, while learning the importance of service-driven leadership.

National Junior Honor Society: Excellence in Action
The OLA chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recognizes students in grades 7 and 8 who exemplify the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Membership is both an honor and a responsibility, reflecting a student’s commitment to excellence in all areas of school life.

Students are selected through a thoughtful and rigorous process led by a Faculty Council, who review academic performance, service involvement, leadership experiences, and personal character. Once inducted during a formal ceremony, members are expected to uphold these standards and actively contribute to both school and community service initiatives.

This experience not only honors students’ achievements but challenges them to continue growing as leaders who make a meaningful impact.

Faith in Action: Service & Community Engagement
Leadership at OLA extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of our community. Our students regularly partner with local organizations, including the Lynnfield Knights of Columbus, to bring service to life in meaningful ways. Whether selling calendars at parish Masses or serving at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner, students experience firsthand the joy and responsibility of giving back.

Students also play an active role in supporting school community events alongside our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), including:
  • Easter Breakfast
  • Ice Cream Social
  • And other cherished school traditions

These opportunities allow students to build relationships across generations, strengthen their sense of belonging, and understand the impact of service within both parish and school communities.

Growing Leaders for Life
At OLA, we believe leadership is cultivated through experience, reflection, and a commitment to something greater than oneself. By providing students with authentic opportunities to lead and serve, we prepare them not only for success in high school and beyond, but for lives rooted in faith, integrity, and purpose.
