MAP Growth Assessment

At Our Lady of the Assumption School, we are committed to helping every student grow with confidence and purpose. One of the tools we use to support that growth is the NWEA MAP Growth assessment, a nationally recognized academic assessment used throughout the Archdiocese of Boston to measure student progress in key skill areas over time.

MAP Growth helps us better understand what each student knows, what they are ready to learn next, and how we can continue to support their academic development throughout the school year.

What Is MAP Growth?
MAP Growth (Measures of Academic Progress) is a computer-based assessment that measures student achievement and academic growth in areas such as reading, language, and mathematics. Students take the assessment on a computer, Chromebook, or iPad.

Unlike a traditional one-size-fits-all test, MAP Growth is adaptive, which means the questions adjust based on a student’s responses. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question may become more challenging. If a student answers incorrectly, the test adjusts accordingly. This allows MAP Growth to identify each child’s current instructional level and provide a more personalized picture of progress.

Why OLA Uses MAP Growth
MAP Growth is one of the ways we partner with families to ensure every student is progressing, challenged, and supported. The assessment provides valuable information that helps our teachers:

Measure student growth over the course of the school year and from year to year
Identify each student’s strengths and areas for continued development
Personalize instruction based on individual learning needs
Monitor academic progress and adjust support when needed
Use data thoughtfully to help students build confidence and reach their full potential

At OLA, MAP Growth is not about placing pressure on students. It is about gaining meaningful insight into how each child learns so that we can continue to provide strong instruction, targeted support, and opportunities for growth.

What Families Should Know
Because MAP Growth is adaptive, students may see questions that feel easier or more challenging as the test progresses. That is completely normal and is part of how the assessment works. The goal is not for every student to answer every question correctly. Rather, the assessment is designed to find the level at which each child is learning and measure growth over time.

MAP Growth results are one piece of a larger picture. Teachers also consider classroom performance, daily work, participation, projects, quizzes, tests, and teacher observation when evaluating student progress.

How to Help Your Child Prepare
The best preparation for MAP Growth is simple:
  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep
  • Provide a healthy breakfast on testing days
  • Encourage your child to take their time and do their best
  • Remind them that the assessment is a tool to help teachers understand how they learn
  • Keep the focus on effort, growth, and confidence rather than perfection

Families who would like to familiarize their child with the format of the assessment may also choose to explore a short practice activity at home.

Practice at Home
To help your child feel comfortable with the MAP Growth testing experience, you may visit the NWEA practice site and try a few sample questions together before testing begins.
