Developing Strong Academic Thinkers
|
Literacy Foundations
Students strengthen their reading and writing through a comprehensive literacy approach focused on phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and written expression. As they progress, students engage with a wide range of texts and genres, building analytical thinking skills while learning to communicate clearly and confidently. Writing becomes an increasingly important focus, helping students organize their thoughts and express ideas effectively. |
Confident Problem-Solvers
Math instruction at OLA goes beyond memorization—students are taught to understand, apply, and explain their thinking. From foundational skills to more advanced concepts like multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry, students build confidence through hands-on learning, real-world applications, and guided problem-solving. Technology and manipulatives are used intentionally to deepen understanding. |
Exploration & Discovery
Science and social studies come to life through interactive, inquiry-based learning. Students explore topics such as life science, weather, geography, and American history while developing the ability to question, analyze, and draw conclusions. Class projects, presentations, and discussions encourage students to take an active role in their learning and build confidence in sharing their ideas. |
Living Our Faith
Faith is an integral part of the elementary experience at OLA. Students participate in daily prayer, reflect on Gospel teachings, and learn the importance of compassion, respect, and service to others. Throughout the year, students attend school Masses and celebrate the Church’s liturgical seasons. In second grade, students prepare for and receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, deepening their connection to their faith community. |
Building Independence & Responsibility
As students grow, so does their sense of responsibility and independence. Teachers guide students in developing strong study habits, organizational skills, and accountability for their work. Opportunities for collaboration, leadership, and classroom participation help students gain confidence, build relationships, and develop a strong sense of self.
Preparing for What Comes Next
By the end of fifth grade, OLA students are well-prepared for the academic expectations of middle school. They leave the elementary program as capable, curious learners—equipped with the skills, discipline, and confidence to take on new challenges.
